Holiday Homework 2 (T3Wk8): National Day
The first National Day Parade started in the morning at 0900. People came as early as 0700 in order to get good vantage points. Singapore's first President, Mr Yusof bin Ishak and Singapore's first Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, were seated with members of the government at the grandstand on the steps of City Hall.
Over the years, the Parade has become the biggest national event in Singapore. What is perhaps most memorable at each celebration is the fireworks display marking the climax of the parade; the sky would be bursting with the wonderful colors of the visual vista, dazzling it as well as the hearts of fellow Singaporeans. On this very special occasion, most Singaporeans would be decked out in patriotic colours - namely, red and white.
The Parade has gained enormous popularity and support from the people that it is not unusual to find massive number of citizens trying to get their hands on a ticket, which is released free-of-charge. In the past, it has been known that people would arrive hours before the ticket booths even open, such as the one in 1998, where some arrived as early as 36 hours before the actual release of tickets.
This proved to be problematic for obvious reasons and as such, the government set up the e-balloting ticketing system in 2003, in order to tackle the problem of overcrowding and possible problems that might result. Such ticketing system enables citizens to stand a chance at winning the tickets by registering their e-mail addresses or mobile numbers at the NDP website or phonelines.
Nearly 50,000 Singaporeans among the first to watch this year's NDP after 3 years of setting up the e-balloting ticketing system in 2003.
Holiday Homework 1 (T3Wk7): Copyright
Copyright is a form of Protection provided to the authors of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works under the Copyright Act (Cap. 63) (the “Act”) in Singapore.“Copyright” is defined as the exclusive legal “right” of the copyright owner to reproduce (“copy”), publish, and sell the matter (whether literary, musical, or artistic work) as covered under the Act.This intangible intellectual property right can exist as literature, art, music, sound recordings, film and broadcasts. Copyright is automatic. The author, performer and maker of the work can claim copyright. Copyright protection exists so long as a protected work is original.
Copyright protection enables the copyright owners to profit from the use or reproduction of their works by preventing others from doing the same. It is unlawful for anyone to violate any of the rights provided by the Act to the owner of copyright. Anyone who, does not have the copyright owner’s consent, and proceeds to do one of the things that the copyright owner is exclusively entitled to do (e.g. makes copies of the copyright owner’s book) is infringing the copyright owner's rights.A common form of copyright infringement takes place when a student photocopies an entire book or substantial portions of a book. That student would infringe copyright. It would also be an infringement to instruct or request someone else, for example, the owner of a photocopy shop to make a copy/copies of copyright material. It is also a violation of copyright if anyone sells, lets for hire or imports for the purpose of trade, any infringing articles, which he knows or ought reasonably to know was made in infringement of the copyright. A person who is found to have more than 5 or more infringing copies of any work is presumed to be in possession for the purpose of sale.
If someone copies something which has the Copyright symbol will be prosecuted by the police because it is illegal.

Personal Response 5: Earthquakes
2. What can people do when there is an earthquake?
3. Do you think scientists can detect an earthquake? If so, how do they do it?
4. Where have earthquakes occurred?
5. Why do these countries have earthquakes?
6. Do you think there will be an earthquake in Singapore? Why?
- If you are INDOORS--STAY THERE! (Get under a desk or table and hang on to it, or move into a hallway or get against an inside wall. STAY CLEAR of windows, fireplaces, and heavy furniture or appliances. GET OUT of the kitchen, which is a dangerous place (things can fall on you). DON'T run downstairs or rush outside while the building is shaking or while there is danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling glass or debris.
- If you are OUTSIDE-- get into the OPEN, away from buildings, power lines, chimneys, and anything else that might fall on you.
- If you are DRIVING--stop, but carefully. Move your car as far out of traffic as possible. DO NOT stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. STAY INSIDE your car until the shaking stops. When you RESUME driving watch for breaks in the pavement, fallen rocks, and bumps in the road at bridge approaches.
- If you are in a MOUNTAINOUS AREA--watch out for falling rock, landslides, trees, and other debris that could be loosened by quakes.
Cracks or fractures in the earth’s crust are known as faults and, because there may be more than one rock fracture, an area is called a fault line. This might be an inactive fault where scientists can see where past movement has been, or one which continues to be active even after millions of years. All but the very deepest earthquakes occur on faults. Faults might be only metres or up to a thousand kilometres.
When tectonic plates move, the rocks at the junction between the two plates are not able to simply glide past each other, due to friction and the rigidity of the rock. Instead, stress builds up in the rock until eventually it breaks, and the two rocky blocks move relative to each other along a fault line. Most Earthquakes are usually from when the place where fault lines are. Luckily Singapore is not near fault lines. Singapore might not have Earthquakes or one day, earthquakes may be in Singapore......

Reflection 4: Food
My school canteen sells nutrition food such as sushi, noodles and economical rice. We need healthier food so that our body is fit and strong. Many people think that we can survive on sweet and fatty food but it is not true. If we do not take care we can suffer from many heart diseases such as heart attacks. So now lets eat a balanced diet!

Personal Response 3: Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
First, go to this link: http://www.hpb.gov.sg/hpb/default.asp?pg_id=865&aid=272
Read the article on Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.
You may also click on the additional links shown on the right-hand side of the page.
Read these articles and give your opinion and comments about them. To guide you in you in writing your personal response, here are some questions:
Why is it important for children to be kept away from crowded public places if they should signs of infection?
Why is it essential to follow good hygiene practices?
What does 'good hygiene practices' mean to you?
~~Reflection~~
Hand, Food and Disease is contagious which can spread easily among places which have a lot of people like shopping centres, food courts and restaurants. We must also have good hygiene practises like washing your hands before eating. Wash hands with soap before eating and after going to the toilet. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Do not share eating utensils. Ensure that toys or appliances that are contaminated by nasal or oral secretions should be cleaned before they are used again. Here are some Symptoms to look out for:
- Fever
- Sore Throat
- Ulcers in the throat, mouth and tongue
- Headache
- a Rash with vesicles (small blisters-- 3-7 mm) on hands, feet and diaper area. The vesicles are typically on the palm side of the hands the sole side of the feet and very characteristic in appearance.
- Loss of appetite
Here are some prevention for HFMD.
The child should be kept away from all public places (such as restaurants, playgrounds, markets and public transport) if he shows signs of infection. Also, keep the child home from school. Family members are advised to follow good hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing, to limit the spread of the infection and to look out for signs and symptoms of other members within the household.
Children with HFMD should remain at home until all the blisters have dried up. Consult your doctor before sending him back to the school, kindergarten or childcare centre. Keep his toys, books, eating utensils, towels and clothes separate from others.Inform the school, kindergarten, or childcare centre as soon as possible. They can monitor other children closely and take additional precautions to prevent the spread of HFMD.

I hope you will really reflect on the topic so that you can write copiously. One or two lines are not adequate as reflection. It would be interesting if you could include some photographs in your post. Hope to read your reflection soon.
Have fun!
~~Reflection~~
Friendship to me is making friends. We must make friends to lead a better life. For example if you do not know something you can ask your friends. We can also make friends by striking a conversation. We must also make friends with other races because we can also have more friends. We must not be racist too. Let`s now start making friends!
